Crowns
Crowns are full coverage restorations that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break, has broken or is too fragile to be restored with a direct filling. They are commonly needed after root canal treatment, or when a large filling wears out or when a tooth fractures. The greater the amount of missing tooth structure the more likely a crown will be needed. While a filling does not protect a weakened tooth from fracture-it is a great treatment for sealing a modestly damaged tooth. When a filling is stretched beyond it's clinical indication the tooth is put at risk for a serious failure. We ask our teeth to withstand dramatic forces during function and parafunction. Placing a weakened tooth into that environment without the needed protection can easily lead to tooth loss and a far more involved prosthetic replacement. Dr. Patel will guide your care and let you know when a crown is needed.
